The Ins and Outs of Day Training

Paws Up came to be as a project from Daniela to reach more pet parents whose goals were not being met and to spread more understanding of our canine companions. For this reason our main philosophy lies on “promoting understanding and empathy towards dogs, considering their perspective and emotions”.
Here at Paws Up, we consider that every dog is unique and believe the best approach to recognizing different learning styles is those that come with clicker training and the quadrant of positive reinforcement. We believe in creating a learning environment that is fun and engaging, promotes positive behavior, and makes the best communication and trust bonds between dogs and their owners.
“When I started training dogs, I volunteered at Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Florida < I must say it’s one of the best shelters I have ever stepped foot in >. As a volunteer, I would assist in helping potential adopters interact with dogs and take the time to take the dogs out to the different playgrounds.
I would always have a pouch with an extra leash and treats provided by the shelter. Still, we were only instructed to do something besides taking them out, giving them time outside, and maybe playing with them. I realized that the dog cared more about me being there than playing in the space I had just brought them to. So I started doing basic things like giving me your paw or sitting, and they would look forward to it.
I entered the shelter one day and was ready to take some dogs out to play and train. As a young volunteer, there were some dogs we weren’t supposed to take out due to behavioral issues; only those who had additional training or worked at the shelter could. That day, I misread the kennel card and took out this excited dog named Loki. He had been there for quite a while and was mostly overlooked because of his excitement and the warning on the kennel card that I had missed entirely.
When we got to the playground, he was super playful; I worked on agility, luring, and basic obedience with him; what a fantastic dog. That’s when I thought, how many dogs like Loki are being categorized in a way that is not true? Daily, some people make unreasonable assumptions about dogs when they don’t even take the time to understand them.
Paws Up Dog training is for Loki and Perla. Loki, the dog who was misread entirely by people who couldn’t understand him; and Perla, my foster failure who is the perfect example of defying the bad reputation pit bulls are given.”
With 3+ years of dog training experience and a Master’s degree in education; Daniela has worked with over 100 dogs and their owners to better their communication and provide enrichment to dogs life.
Daniela is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge assessed (CPDT-KA) through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Training. Additionally, she is a Karen Pryor Academy certified training partner (KPA-CTP) .
Focusing on purely positive reinforcement in her training, her approach is based on observation of dog behavior to better understand them and consider their emotions. Building a basic understanding and communication route with your dog leads to a wonderful connection on the path of building life long skills.
